Green Mountain Power broke new ground when it became the first utility in the country to help its customers go off the grid. Now you can decide to be totally energy independent and reduce your carbon emissions with a package specially customized for your home. First, we’ll do an energy efficiency audit in partnership with Efficiency Vermont, and then suggest solar array, battery storage, and home automation controls that allow you to easily manage energy resources and usage. You may also have a generator to use as backup for short periods of time, if necessary. In addition to producing your own clean energy, you will have a flat monthly fee for energy instead of the fluctuations you experience today.
Our energy future is one where more of our energy is generated closer to where it is needed and is home, business, and community-based.
GMP first designed an off-grid package with Vermont State Park officials for Emerald Lake State Park in East Dorset, Vermont. The park has rest room facilities served by an electric line stretching a half-mile through swamps, marshes, and heavily forested terrain that needed to be replaced. Pairing solar and storage will increase reliability and mean the park is powered by clean power – the sun! The cost to install the solar and storage system is less than what it would have cost to rebuild the line. And there are additional maintenance savings, as every year it costs about $7000 to $8000 for lineworkers to repair damage to the lines feeding the park.
The park went off-grid in the summer of 2017. This solution provides excellent reliability while saving GMP customers the cost of maintaining the power line, and it keeps lineworkers safer from having to repair the old lines feeding the park.

Having more customers go off-grid may allow GMP to retire more line sections over time, reducing maintenance costs that will directly lower costs for all customers. In addition, off-grid homes will no longer contribute to costly system peaks during peak summer energy days, lowering costs further and reducing the need to build and maintain lines to meet that demand.
