GMP Restores Power to 15,800 as Snowstorm Slams Vermont With Hazardous Road Conditions, Ice and Outages
GMP Urges Safety for Customers as Storm Leaves Greater-Than-Forecasted Damage
7 February 2020
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Green Mountain Power (GMP) is urging safety for customers as a multi-part storm drops snow and ice and driving conditions continue to be hazardous throughout Vermont. GMP tracked the storm before it hit with multiple forecasts and crews were ready, working all day restoring power to more than 15,800 customers. Currently about 9,550 are out and more outages are expected as gusty winds are forecasted to continue until midnight. Damage due to icing was greater than forecasted and escalated quickly late today.
“We’ve been tracking this storm for days and have been communicating with multiple forecasters to be prepared to respond quickly and safely for customers. Dangerous road conditions are making travel slow for anyone on the road, including our crews,” said Mike Burke, who leads Field Operations for GMP. “Damage unfortunately from ice and snow loading is greater than forecasted, and crews will be working through the night to help customers.”
GMP had extra crews available and they are joining GMP crews to aid in restoration as more outages are expected tonight, and the company is alerting customers to be prepared for possibly longer outages due to extreme travel conditions and the amount of damage. Report downed lines and trees to GMP and stay away from them because they may be energized. Customers can call 888-835-4672 to report outages and should call 911 for a medical emergency.
