Conscious Capitalism Media Credits Powell with Breaking Barriers and Leading with Love
19 January 2018
Colchester, Vt – Conscious Captialism Media (CCM), a global company focused on celebrating inspiring, cutting edge stories about business as a force for good, has named Green Mountain Power president and CEO Mary Powell to its 2018 list of 30 World-Changing Women in Conscious Business. In her write-up about Powell, CCM’s editorial director, Rachel Zurer, relayed how since Powell took the helm at Green Mountain Power (GMP) in 2008, she has continued to break barriers and shake up assumptions about what a utility can be.
“Under (Powell’s) leadership, GMP also became the first utility to partner with Tesla on Powerwall home energy solutions, and the first to offer a battery/solar off-grid package to its customers,” Zurer states.
“Her focus on ‘leading with love’ seems to be working: in a survey required by Vermont regulators, in 2016 GMP received a 94 percent customer service satisfaction score and a 96 percent on providing reliable electric service,” she continues.
CCM undertook compiling the list of fearless females when its CEO Meghan French Dunbar participated in an all-female journey into the Amazon rainforest last summer. After spending time with the women on her trip, she was more convinced than ever of the importance — for both men and women — of witnessing heroic female leadership.
“Half of all humans born on this planet are female,” Zurer writes. “You’d think that would mean that half the heroes we hear about — at work, in school, in the media — would be, too. But we all know the truth is far different, especially in the business world. Only 32 of the Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs. Even at Conscious Capitalism’s CEO Summit, only three of 19 speakers last year were female. We’d like to change that,” she explains.
In choosing women for the World-Changing Women list, the company reached out to its ever-growing network of allies in all corners of the conscious business world, from industry groups to up-and-coming entrepreneurs to partners at other media organizations for suggestions. They then narrowed the group down to just 30.
Powell joins 29 other inspiring women in diverse fields and from wide-flung locations on the list. Among them are:
- Michele Bousquet, 40, Senior Director of Organizational Development at GoPro in San Mateo, CA
- Nidhi Raina, Head of Personal Excellence and Organizational Transformation at Tata Consultancy Services in Mumbai, India
- Denise Morrison, President and CEO of Campbell Soup Company in Princeton, NJ
- Berry Liberman, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Small Giants and Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Dumbo Feather Magazine and Podcast in Melbourne, Australia

Powell said she was honored to be in such company and particularly inspired by the spirit behind the award.
“This is an example of women lifting other women up,” she said. “That’s important to women and to all of us. We need to create a business environment where everyone who brings their best talents to work can succeed. Hopefully this list will remind everyone what many already know, that women are doing very important and transformational work in the world.”
Powell also recognized CCM’s emphasis on fairness and compassion in its picks.
“I have long said that I believe in the power of love: the power it holds to transform lives, the power it holds to transform companies, the power it holds to solve problems and to innovate a future that is better than our present or past,” she states. “I’m proud that CCM used that very quote from me in their write-up.”
