Storm Clean-up Safety

In the wake of a wind storm that wreaked near-hurricane-force winds on much of our service area, we are very worried about the safety of our friends and neighbors as they dig out. Several of the deaths associated with the hurricanes that hit the south this year were electrocutions due to downed lines.

If there are trick-or-treaters in your life, please make sure they stay away from potential hazards tonight. There are still a lot of lines down in yards and on roadways. When the sun goes down, it’s even harder to see them. Arm your children with good quality flashlights and make sure their Halloween routes are safe from downed lines. Especially avoid any roads that have been closed, as there are likely dangerous lines on them.

We all know that when times get tough, Vermonters chip in and help each other out. But the tendency to take charge in emergency situations can put you in danger. Frustrated by wait-times for clear roads and repaired power lines, you may be tempted to help by clearing trees that are blocking roadways near downed lines. Please, please don’t go within 50 feet of a downed power line or a tree or other item that could be touching it. Assume that the downed line might be energized and therefore deadly if you get too close. If you see downed lines, call 9-1-1. We will work with emergency personnel to dispatch crews with the right skills and equipment to deal with them safely.
